For the past week, I've been juicing carrots for Marlon and he recently gave me a health update: He told me that his coffee cravings have substantially reduced since we started juicing. Yeah!
I was so happy to hear this, so I thought I'd share a shortcut to our juicing practices.
- Buy bulk carrots at the Co-Op
- Scrub them & cut off the tops
- Put them in a big container of water to soak
- Refridgerate for easy access for juicing
One last tip, change out the water every few days (possibly pour it out on your garden)
Our family recently watched the movie, "Ingredients", on Netflix and it opened my eyes, (yet again), to many truths about our food source.
There were many highlights for me in this film, but what stood out most was when the farmer talked about the mixture of cows in ground beef. Hundreds, if not thousands, of different cows make up a typical package of ground beef. What if one is sick? Not only that, but the mixing of so many different animals just doesn't seem natural.
This simple realization helps me to be very grateful that Marlon is investing in a few cows to bring to the farm at some point. This will give us a better understanding of how our cow was raised and slaughtered.
Any meat insights to share(?)
My tastebuds are tempted to eat junk food, so I have to remind myself:
"MORE PRODUCE, LESS PROCESSED!"
Say it with me: "MORE PRODUCE, LESS PROCESSED!"
Ah, I feel a little better. The word produce even sounds better than processed :)
We had an excess of cabbages, so our friend researched how to dehydrate them into "cabbage chips." She used a combination of the following recipes (click pdf document below):

The yummy cabbage chips were wonderful!
(BTW, this recipe can also be used for kale, spinach, chard, collard greens, beet greens, sorrell and arugula.
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS LITTLE CLIP:

This was just a small sampling of the leftovers from our Agriculture Co-Op....The majority was grown or gathered locally (all but the oranges)
As I've mentioned before, try to Support Local & Eat Healthy :)
It's so amazing the things children remember....About a month ago, MaYah was exposed to some sort of virus which caused a little coughing and some conjestion. She was only about a month old, so I had limited home remedies that I could think of. Thankfully, our oldest daughter, Mariah, rememebered the garlic treatment from one of my studies....
If you have a young child, you can crush a few cloves of garlic and put them in the baby's socks for gradual absorption in the blood stream. Mariah took initiative to help her little sister and make her a "garlic foot." After a few treatments, the wonderful benefits of garlic healed our precious sweetpea. YA GOTTA LOVE GARLIC!Here's another post about garlic:http://www.joyfuljunction.com/1/post/2011/02/the-wonder-of-garlic.html
Lately, Marlon has been dealing with a reaction to the poision oak that he encountered during our visit to my mom's house. He has had severe swelling and itching from his contact with the bushes he was removing near the creek.
The irritation has been so uncomfortable that he's often gotten up in the middle of the night to wash with hot water and apply various ointments to help soothe and heal. Finally, he was about to go to a doctor for a prescription, but instead he decided to give natural remedies one more chance....Tea Tree Oil!
He bought a 16oz bottle for less than it would cost for a doctor visit and Im so happy to share that after just a few days, he's on his path to healing. HALLELUYAH!
