For the few of you that visit us here on "JJ", I'd like to know your thoughts on boys & guns.  Let me share a bit more....

For many years, we have not allowed toy guns in our home.  It seemed to promote violence & we wanted to prevent those disturbances in our environment.  However, as our oldest son approaches his teenage years, we believe he needs to be prepared to protect & defend his family. He does have the maturity and understanding to take on the task of gun safety & practice shooting.

Honestly, I don't want to squash our sons natural design for defense by banning guns.  At the same time, I don't want to encourage a ultra-militant attitude.  Does this make sense?

So, what are your thoughts??

What a great blog! I saw it on the La. Natural Birth site.

I wanted to comment on the gun thing. I totally understand your concern, as we talk about the same thing in our family. We are big 2nd amendment folks, but don't want to promote violence. My husband is also teaching firearms safety, so it is on our minds alot.

I read a great article in Mothering magazine about the issue of guns and play, you might want to check it out. We plan on teaching our sons an immense respect for guns. As children, both my husband and I had it drilled into our heads about gun safety. It was as important as not running into the road for fear of getting run over.

You sound like you are a great teacher, and such a loving mother. You obviously teach respect for life but also the sanctity of protecting it too. I think you will teach the right thing to your children; you don't have to worry too much aobut teaching the "wrong thing".

Hugs and love,
Jenny
